This Privacy Policy explains how Utter collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use the Utter mobile app (Android/iOS).
If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use Utter.
1) Overview
Utter is a local-first application designed to convert voice into notes, to-dos, and journals. We prioritize your privacy: no account is required, and your notes, journals and todos content are stored exclusively on your device.

A) Audio & microphone (in-app)
When you tap Record, Utter accesses your device microphone to capture audio so we can transcribe it into text using Deepgram Nova-3 transcription service. Microphone access is sensitive and is used only for recording/transcription.
We process:
- Audio you record in the app
- Transcribed text (the transcript)
- Transcription metadata (e.g., selected language, timestamps)
B) Your content (notes, journals, to-dos)
Utter stores the text you create (notes, journal entries, to-do items), including titles, folders, and edits.
Storage: Your content is stored on your device. If you delete the app, this on-device content will be deleted with it. We do not have access to these files.
C) Account information
Utter does not require login. We do not collect your email address for app usage.
D) Subscription & purchase information (Pro)
We use RevenueCat to manage Pro subscriptions. If you purchase Pro, we (and our subscription provider) process information needed to validate access, such as:
- Subscription status / entitlement status
- Purchase history (as required for subscription validation)
E) Technical Log Data
We use Vercel to host the backend endpoint that issues Deepgram auth tokens. When the app requests transcription access, requests are processed by Vercel infrastructure and may include technical metadata (such as IP address and request headers) required for secure service operation.
F) Device Identifiers
RevenueCat may collect an anonymous device identifier to manage your subscription status across app reinstalls. This identifier is not linked to your personal identity.
G) Analytics
Utter does not use third-party analytics or crash reporting services that collect personal data.
3) How we use information
We use the information above to:
- Provide core functionality (recording, transcription, saving notes/ journals/to-dos, folders, search)
- Improve reliability and performance
- Manage Pro subscriptions and restore purchases
We do not sell personal or sensitive user data. We do not share data with third parties for advertising purposes. All data transmitted to third-party services (Deepgram, RevenueCat) is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS.
4) Third-party processors
- Deepgram: audio stream + language/timestamps -> transcription
- RevenueCat: purchase/subscription metadata + device/app identifiers -> entitlement & restore
- Vercel: backend hosting
- Apple/Google: payment processing
5) How transcription works (Deepgram Nova-3)
Utter uses Deepgram (including the Nova-3 model) to convert speech to text.
When you use transcription, your audio is sent securely to Deepgram for processing, and the transcript is returned to Utter. Deepgram processes audio to return transcripts; retention of Customer Data is governed by Deepgram's terms.
For details, see Deepgram's privacy notice: https://deepgram.com/data-security
6) Payments & subscriptions
Purchases are processed by Apple App Store or Google Play Store. We do not receive your full payment card details.
We use RevenueCat to validate purchases and manage subscription entitlements. Google Play requires disclosing "Purchase history" when using RevenueCat.
RevenueCat may collect:
- Anonymous app user ID
- Purchase receipts and transaction IDs
- Device type and OS version
- Subscription status and expiration dates
RevenueCat's privacy policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy
7) Sharing & disclosure
We may share data with:
- Service providers that help run the app (e.g., Deepgram for transcription; RevenueCat for subscription entitlement)
- Legal/safety if required by law or to protect rights and safety
We do not sell personal or sensitive data.
8) Data retention
You can delete your notes, todos or journals at any time within the app. Deleting the Utter app will remove all locally stored data from your device. Your device/OS may back up app data as part of system backups; this is controlled by your OS settings.
Requesting Deletion: Since we do not store your data on our servers, we cannot "delete" your data for you. However, if you have concerns regarding subscription metadata, you may contact us at vellannadarajan@yahoo.com to request the removal of any records associated with your device ID.
Audio for transcription: processed by Deepgram, handled according to Deepgram's retention/configuration and privacy terms.
9) Security
We use reasonable measures to protect information in transit and at rest. No system is perfectly secure, so also protect your device with strong credentials and device hygiene.
10) International Data Transfers
By using Utter, you acknowledge that your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own (specifically the United States), where our service providers' servers are located.
11) Your Rights (GDPR/CCPA/PDPA)
Depending on your location, you have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data. Because Utter is a "no-login" app, most of these rights are exercised by you directly through the app's interface (e.g., deleting a note).
12) Notifications & Reminders (Local Only)
Utter can send you optional notifications to remind you about incomplete tasks and scheduled reminders. These reminders are generated and scheduled on your device using the tasks and reminder times you create in the app. Utter does not upload your tasks, reminder details, or notification content to our servers for this feature.
What appears in notifications
Depending on your device settings, notifications may display task titles or reminder details on your lock screen. You can control notification visibility and disable notifications at any time in your device settings.
Permissions
If required by your device, Utter may request permission to post notifications. You can deny or revoke this permission at any time in your device settings.
13) Your choices
You can:
- Disable microphone permission in device settings (app recording won't work without it)
- Delete content in the app (and delete the app to remove on-device data)
